Encapsulation System

There are 122 miles of sewer mains that make up the City of Murray Sanitary Sewer System. Raw sewage leaves the residence or business and travels into an underground network of increasingly larger pipes. These pipes, or "mains" are interconnected by manholes around the city.

A map of the system looks somewhat like a tree-top with smaller branches leading into larger branches, and those larger branches leading into even larger branches sometimes called trunk lines. Drops in elevation are necessary to transport sewage, but in some cases where a housing development lies over a hill, a lift station is required to transport the sewage over the hill. Sewer mains are required to be buried deep in the ground away from the influence of surface storm water. This prevents contamination of storm water.
